Summer is a fun time to cook outdoors and spend time with family and friends. And, while you may be excited about sharing your latest burger or ribs recipe with loved ones, you probably didn’t invite pests to your cookout.

When you fire up the grill, it can be annoying when unwanted insects show up to the party. So, how do you keep bugs away from your grill? Here are some helpful tips.

  1. Use a Fan

It’s a simple concept. When you have a nice breeze present, it’s more difficult for bugs to stick around. Place a fan, even a portable box fan, near your barbeque grill. This can keep the cook and their guests cool as well as deter pests like bees, flies, and mosquitoes.

  1. Take Out the Trash

If you’re cooking and entertaining outside, you might accumulate some trash. Get rid of it quickly, or it’s going to attract unwanted pests. Either have a trash receptacle with a tight lid on hand or simply take everything back into the house for disposal.

  1. Introduce Insect Repellants

While you don’t want to spray Off on your burgers, it’s a good idea to use some type of bug repellant when you’re outside during the summer months. You can place some citronella candles around your patio, but also be sure to apply a good repellant that includes DEET, lemon-eucalyptus, or picaridin.

  1. Get Rid of Standing Water

Mosquitoes only need about ½-inch of standing water to start breeding. If you don’t want to have your barbeque doubling as a nursery for insects, get rid of any standing water. Empty buckets, baby pools, birdbaths, grill covers, and flower pots that have collected rainwater or condensation.

  1. Leverage Your Plants

Believe it or not, the plants you choose for your garden can help keep unwanted insects at bay thanks to scents and oils they produce. And, some of these herbs can add flavor to your outdoor barbeque. Some of the herbs and flavors that deter pests include:

  • Rosemary
  • Mint
  • Basil
  • Bay Leaf
  • Lavender
  • Garlic
  • Chives
  • Onions
  • Lemon
  1. Cut the Grass

It’s a good idea to cut your grass at least once per week during the warmer months. This can prevent pests, like mosquitoes, from creating a home in your yard.

  1. Choose Clothing Wisely

You can keep insects away from your barbeque by wearing lighter clothing, since darker clothing creates more body heat and attracts bugs. Further, choose Insect Shield clothing, which is an EPA-registered technology that provides protection from bothersome pests.

  1. Schedule Preventative Pest Control

Your first line of defense against a ruined family barbeque is to take some preventative steps to keep bugs away from your home and yard. Regular pest control treatments will keep mosquitoes, ants, wasps, spiders, bees, and more from taking over your property.

With a little planning and prep, you can prevent bugs from taking over your grill and outdoor get-togethers. Of course, it never hurts to professionally treat your lawn, which can significantly cut down on the number of insects in your outdoor space.
